Poetry from Art: Make Visual Art, Write Poetry
Hosted by Lisa Miller & BLove Healing Arts, LLC
Have you wanted to write poetry? Understand why and how poetry makes sense? Want to find yourself in the flow of art that moves through you and moves you? Writing poetry is as close to the heart as prayer. It's right there in the same way that your thoughts and personal stories are right there—and sometimes the stories of loved ones too. Most, writing a poem is as close to the heart as breathing.
HOUR ONE: This playshop will open with a calming, breathing-meditation to help ground participants in the wise place of self and to step through the door of creative flow. We’ll look at examples of gorgeous contemporary poetry and discuss why certain poems work in terms of form, voice, tone, imagery, metaphor, tension. Learn some fancy terms like: caesura, alliteration, volta, enjambment. Learn how to “break a line” for impact and surprise.
HOUR TWO: Let's write! Using a photo image as a helping tool to direct theme and voice—participants will approach the page with ease and electricity—let’s see what comes through. Learn how to write “the shitty first draft” and then fine tune it. We’ll edit with an eye for brevity and a few new poetic devices from hour one.
HOUR THREE: Poetry-up-your-image. We’ll apply words and lines from the page to the photos themselves (craft supplies provided). We’ll read our work aloud. Participants will leave with the solid draft of a new poem and beautiful journaled pages. Participants will leave with take-home awe for the community of a women’s circle, art, intuition and new skills as writers.
