Amphitrite Awakes

Amphitrite Awakes

Opening Reception March 6, 5-7 pm
Closing Reception April 26, 3-5 pm

Artist Statement: Ancient societies often worshipped ocean goddesses -- Amphitrite, Ceto, Mazu, Tiamat -- as the source of life, health, and wisdom. In this installation, Christina Conklin uses algae she has gathered from Bay Area shorelines to create vessels, wombs, and wings -- an act of reclamation of sacred feminine power in response to patriarchal and colonial structures. These forms will fade and change over time, in ongoing relationship with the elements, and then will be ritually returned to the sea.

Artist Bio: Christina Conklin is an artist, writer, and researcher who investigates the intersection of natural systems and belief systems, often using the ocean as both site and metaphor. She holds an MFA from California College of the Arts, has exhibited internationally, and is the author of The Atlas of Disappearing Places: Our Coasts and Oceans in the Climate Crisis (The New Press, 2021). She lives in Half Moon Bay, California.
